In Memory of Roy James Kuta Sr.

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of our beloved patriarch, Roy James Kuta Sr., who died peacefully on July 18, 2025, in Orleans, Ontario, at the age of 85, surrounded by his devoted wife and family.

Born in February, 1940, in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Roy was the son of Walter and Maude Kuta, and the fourth of eight children. He was survived by his brothers William (Anne) and David, and predeceased by his parents and siblings: Joyce, Walter, Elsie, Jerry, and James.

Roy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He leaves behind his cherished wife and partner of 63 years, Margaret Kuta (née Dicks), and his three loving children: Susanne (Steve), Jamie, and John (Blanche). He was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him endless joy and pride.

Family meant everything to Roy. His quiet strength and unwavering support helped shape the foundation of our family for generations to come. A highlight of many Christmases was Santa’s annual arrival at Roy and Marg’s home just after dinner — to the great delight of the grandchildren. Strangely, Roy always seemed to miss Santa’s visit, although if you looked closely under the beard, there was a familiar twinkle in those eyes…

Roy built a long and respected career as a construction engineer with the Royal Canadian Airforce, serving for over 38 years. He enlisted as a private in 1958, soon found his calling as an electrician, and eventually became skilled across a wide range of construction trades. Rising through the ranks to Chief Warrant Officer, he later accepted a commission and retired as Captain Kuta. Known for his integrity, quiet humor, and firm but fair leadership, he earned the nickname “BaraKuta” on construction sites. His career gave Roy the opportunity to travel the globe, and he spent time in Asia, the middle east, travelled to all three coasts of Canada and to every province in between. Roy spoke often of the special month-long trip he and Marg took to Isreal and Syria while he was posted to the UN Peacekeeping Forces in the Golan heights.

Roy truly was a builder at heart — and in his private life constructed four family homes during various military postings, and countless renovations and projects for family and friends over the years. Susanne, Jamie and John owe their skills with tools and their handyman abilities to Roy.

Near the end of his military service, Roy and Marg embarked on a new adventure, opening the Cape Cod Inn Bed and Breakfast in Gander, Newfoundland. Over the course of a decade, they built it into a successful and well-loved business — one of the first B&Bs in the province to receive a four-star rating and recognition from Hospitality Newfoundland & Labrador. In 1998, they sold the inn and moved to Mississauga, Ontario, to be closer to their children.

In retirement, Roy found joy in his grandchildren, gardening, woodworking, travel, and time spent with loved ones. Whether sharing a beer, telling a story, or singing “Oh Lord, It’s Hard to Be Humble” with his grandchildren, Roy cherished every opportunity to connect. He met many friends in his Mississauga neighborhood while on his daily walks and more friends at the weekly skating club he and Marg were part of. He kept his children and grandchildren on speed dial, and no matter where they were in the world, they could expect a daily check-in. He took great pride in their lives and every one of their accomplishments.

Roy shared a remarkable 63-year marriage with his beloved Marg — a partnership rooted in deep love, mutual respect, and a lifetime of shared adventures. From very humble beginnings, they built a family, ran a business side by side, and remained truly inseparable. Roy adored Marg, and though she sometimes acted as if she didn’t welcome his constant affection, everyone knew she cherished it just as much. Their bond was filled with laughter, loyalty, and a playful spirit that endured to the very end — a love that quietly inspired all who knew them.

A private ceremony will be held for immediate family. Given the large number of family and friends traveling from afar, a celebration of Roy’s life will be held Saturday, September 6th at the Heritage Funeral Complex, 1250 Trim Road, Orleans, Ontario. Friends are invited to visit at 12noon, followed by a Memorial Service in the Chapel at 1PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Roy’s memory to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.

Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in the love Roy gave so freely and the countless memories he leaves behind. His presence will be missed in every quiet moment and family gathering — but we will carry his spirit with us always.

Uncle Roy was a beautiful soul and will be deeply missed. 💔

Marg, Susanne, Jamie, and John, and family I am so sorry to hear of Roy’s passing. Roy was a wonderful human being and devoted husband, father, grand father to his family. We had wonderful times and great memories when our families were together through out the years. I didn’t know Roy’s nickname was “Barakuta”. The nickname fits so well with my memories of Roy. The year 2025 is a sad year for both our families. We share the passing of our fathers who would pass within a month of each other. The pain is great but I take comfort in knowing they both passed with their passing wishes fulfilled. My deepest condolences, love and hugs to the Kuta family. Rest in eternal peace Roy. Say hello to dad, pop, nan, and Paul for the family.❤️

So sorry on hearing that Roy has passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with Marg and family. Having Roy as our neighbour in Mississauga for over 25 years was a blessing.
He will be truly missed.

What a beautiful tribute to an absolutely wonderful man! I’m so glad I had the honor of meeting Roy, on several occasions, at Susanne and Steve’s. Always smiling with a twinkle in his eye. May the family find some comfort knowing he’s your angel now, resting in peace. My heart goes out to all who love him.

What a remarkable life he lived, full of love, purpose, and so many beautiful moments that clearly meant the world to you all.

His dedication to family, his quiet strength, and the joy he found in building (whether homes, memories, or that special Santa tradition) shine through every word.

It’s evident he left an extraordinary legacy of love, and that’s a gift no one can take away.

Please know you’re in my thoughts during this difficult time. Sending you all gentle strength and heartfelt sympathy.
