In Memory of Muthusamy ‘Bala’ Balasubramaniam
It is with a heavy heart we share the passing of Muthusamy ‘Bala’ Balasubramaniam of Ottawa, Ontario, on April 4th, 2025, at 1:45PM at the Ottawa Hospital – General Campus from ongoing health complications.
He was born on May 8th, 1962, to Muthusamy and Meenatchy in Jaffna, Sri Lanka and raised in hometown Vavuniya, Saraswathy Mill, Sri Lanka.
Bala arrived in Canada as a refugee during the Sri Lankan Civil War in 1989, seeking a peaceful and prosperous life for his family, working relentlessly to sponsor both his wife and brothers to join him. He attended Centennial College in ‘94 and continued on to Concordia University in ’99, studying Computer Analytics.
He married Lalitha Balasubramaniam on June 19, 1994, and they had three children, Kaven (29), Puvithira (27), and Krithiha (24).
He worked several jobs until he started his own business in 2012 as a courier driver and retired from self-employment in 2023 due to his health complications.
He was an avid travel enthusiast having been to countries in South Asia, Europe, and South America, experiencing the cultures of the world through both people and food. Not only did Bala love to visit the destinations, but he was also appreciative of the journey itself. Bala always had a fascination for the ways in which one travels, whether that be on train, aircraft, or a simple RV, with his truck being his most prized possession that allowed his business to thrive.
Bala is survived by his wife, Lali, children Kavi, Puvi, and Kithi, and siblings Balachandran, Balasaraswathy, and Balakrishnan.
He was preceded in death by his parents Muthusamy and Meenatchy, and sibling Balendrakumar
Visitation will be April 13th, 2025, at Heritage Funeral Complex (1250 Trim Road, Orleans, ON., K4A 3P7) from 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM.
