In Memory of Elio Guzzo
On September 13, 2023, Elio Guzzo, loving husband, father, and nonno passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the age of 84 at the Civic Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario after a brief illness. Elio was born on November 8, 1938 to Ernesto and Maria Guzzo in Pianzano, Treviso, Italy. He had a wonderful childhood growing up on the family farm along with his five brothers and sisters, and often shared many funny stories of boyhood mischief. He emigrated to Thunder Bay, Ontario at the age of 19 to begin a new life. He worked for several local area shops as an autobody repairman before settling into a long career at Mascarin Autobody, retiring in 2001.
In 1963 he met the love of his life Helen Blazina and they married on July 11, 1964. Throughout the 1960’s, Elio was an integral part of the legendary Italia Soccer Club that won numerous Thunder Bay city titles. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying both fishing and hunting. He loved playing bocce and won several tournaments later in life. His Italian heritage was always important to him. He was a lifetime member of the Da Vinci Centre in Thunder Bay, serving as Chairman of the Sports Committee and later as the President of the Da Vinci Centre itself. Elio was outgoing, friendly and loved to joke and laugh.
Family was always extremely important to him, so in 2001 he and his wife Helen made a life changing move to Ottawa, Ontario to be closer to family. He enjoyed making spaghetti, bean soup and polenta dinners for his family, having the greenest lawn on the street, and most importantly, spending time with and spoiling his two granddaughters.
Elio is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Helen, son Eddy (Gaetane), and granddaughters Emma and Stephanie Guzzo. He is also survived by an extended family in Italy including brother Stefano, sisters Anna-Maria and Maria-Teresa, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, as well as sisters Evelina and Antonette. As per Elio’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in the privacy of the family.
You are a husband, father and nonno that we all looked up to. We love you. Rest in peace.
Our condolences and prayers to Helen, Eddy, and the Guzzo family. Elio was an amazing neighbor to us and was always there to offer his help for things around our home with his vast life knowledge and experience. We will always be gratefully thankful for all his help he has given us over the years.
Rest in peace!

Just heard today of Elio. passing away. So very sad to hear of his passing. Have lived behind Elio and Helen since 2003. Elio was always friendly and always had a smile for you. On my numerous walks by their house always stopped to talk to both when they were outside. Always so friendly. He will be missed. Our thoughts are with Helen and the family. Rest in peace Elio.

Helen, Eddy & Family. I was so sorry to hear of Elio’s passing and wanted to extend my deepest condolences to all of you. The one thing that I remember about him was his smile, he always seemed to have a smile on his face. I hope the memories that you have made throughout the years will help to lessen the pain you’re feeling now and when you look back it’s that smile that you’ll remember too. Sending you hugs Rita Cacciatore ❤️
