In Memory of Qing Guo Chen
It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of Mr. Qing Guo Chen who passed away on March 16th, 2020. A loving husband and the father of 2 boys.
Qing Guo was a family man at heart. He did everything that was necessary to support his young family back in the 1970s in a post-cultural revolution China where pretty much everything was rationed. Although he had to work hundreds of kilometres away in another city in order to provide for his family, he always managed to visit his family as much as he could and also brought back additional supplies even if he had to carry them on his bicycle. When home, he would help out with anything that needed to be done for his family and relatives. Never a word of complaint.
When he immigrated to Canada with his family with very little money from China in the 1980s, he had to start over and worked in the kitchens at a number of Chinese restaurants in Montreal. Since then, using his innate talent for the culinary arts and hard work, he worked to become the head chef of one of Montreal’s best Chinese restaurants that served even prime ministers.
In 1997, Qing Guo moved to Ottawa with his family and opened a restaurant. It was very hard at the beginning to open a new business with little previous business experience and in a new city. But he never gave up and always tackled the difficult tasks with tremendous energy and good humour. Eventually, the restaurant become widely known as one of the best Sichuan restauranst in Ottawa and served the people of Ottawa for 22 great years with many customers throughout the city and beyond.
Qing Guo leaves behind his wife of 51 years, Lily and his 2 sons, Yi and Ying. He shall be dearly missed by them as well as by his daughter-in-law, Marina and his favourite grand son, Enzo.
