In Memory of Mary Tryphena Smith

Mary died suddenly on June 18th, 2018 with her loving family by her side.  She was born on March 10th, 1925 to the late Lt Col. W.G.H. Wurtele and Eva Barnett.  She is predeceased by her husband (Marson (CAM)) of 54 years, her twin (Joan), brother (Douglas) and sister (Daphne).  She is survived by her children Bruce (Katharine), Rodney (Lenore), Pamela (John), Jennifer (Robert) and Peter (Krista) and grandchildren Tanya, Tara, Drew, Mark, Jonah, Amelia and Neil. Mary initially developed her strong sense of community and duty growing up in Rockcliffe Park.  Joining the farmerettes and starting a career in nursing was her contribution to the war effort. She worked across Canada and in London, England, as a nurse before settling in Cumberland with Marson in 1956. Mary had a lifelong passion for learning and travelling, as she was curious and interested in people.  She always saw the good in them, loving social interactions and any venue that enabled it.  Whether it was sports (especially golf, tennis, curling, bicycling and skiing), community service (Home and School, Anglican Church, United Church, WI, Riverside Hospital Palliative care), her book club or a party, Mary was always eager to meet with friends, old and new.  She brought her enthusiasm, morals and sense of humor to conversations and debates about society.  She always wanted to bridge the barriers between people and communities.  Mary was a loving, generous, kind, selfless, thoughtful believer in Christ’s teachings.  She will be deeply missed, always loved and never forgotten. A memorial service will be held at St Andrew’s United Church (2557 Old Montreal Road) in Cumberland on Saturday, July 7 at 10:30am, followed by a reception at the Maple Hall just across the street.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Cumberland Lions Club or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Online condolences may shared at : www.heritagefh.ca
