In Memory of John Wiebe

Born to a large Mennonite family in the small town of Altona, Manitoba, the sunflower capital of Canada, John was born into a large family with 13 siblings. His early years were spent in Steinbach Manitoba with his extended clan.

John had many careers in his life, including serving in the Canadian Forces during the Korean War, the Anglican church army and Salvation Army. He ultimately found his calling and true passion as an Anglican Minister and worked in many communities including Dauphin and Rivers Manitoba and ultimately enjoying his final posting in the Cree Nation of Mistassini, QC. With his wife of 61 years Eileen, John had many great adventures, including extensive travel and setting up a trade school in Ghana, Africa. But his greatest passions were the love of a good book, the company of his beloved bride and a constant cup of steaming coffee (not too strong) in hand. He also loved joining a wide circle of family and friends at celebrations over the years where he was known to enjoy an extra scoop of ice cream at the dessert table and a quiet nap in a comfy chair when the party settled down.

He will be lovingly remembered by his family. Wife Eileen (whom he called Dearie), daughters Ruth (Jeff), Shelagh, and Kevin who sadly passed away in 2016 (Ishbel). Granddaughters Catherine (Jeff), Kristin (Jon), Suzannah, Carolynne and Amanda (in Ghana) and great grand-children Kenneth, Lindsay, Sophia, Jack and Rachel. To this latest generation, he will be remembered as the grandpa/great-grandpa who loved a quick witted comeback and was up for a hug any time of day.

In lieu of flowers, if desired, the family would appreciate a donation to Options Bytown Supportive Housing Ottawa or the Ottawa Food Bank in John’s memory.

At this time a private family memorial will be held and a gathering and hymn sing at a later date.
