In Memory of Donald “Vance” MacNaughton

On February 6, 2021 Vance Mac Naughton of Ottawa passed away peacefully at his home with his two children each holding one of his hands.

He was born in a modest farmhouse in Black River, N.B. on October 29, 1934. The son of the late Ian and Bertha (nee MacDonald) MacNaughton. Loving husband to the late Hannah (nee Tracey) (2012) MacNaughton. Loving father and mentor to Angus and Heather (James Wills). We were so happy and blessed that we could keep our Dad in his own home, as his dementia progressed to an advanced state.

Predeceased by his brother Murray (2016) and sister-in-law Isabel (2012).

Lifelong friend of the late Larry Kelly (2016) of Moncton, N.B.

Dad met mom in Dublin, Ireland when he was on Holidays. After a week of dancing at the “Four Corners” dance hall, he said good-bye and headed back to Canada. He quickly realized a void in his life and wrote a letter to her address: Second street left past the Odeon Theater, third house on the right, Dublin, Ireland. The letter remarkably made it to her and the rest as they say is history. They were married in 1958 until Mom’s passing. Dad devoted his life to the happiness of his wife and children. Dad was an absolute rock in the care he gave Mom in her final years.

At 12:15 a.m., Dad took his last breath, nine years to the day his beautiful wife passed away. They were like “two peas in a pod” and just shows how “in sync” they were.

Dad spent 35 plus years in the military as a radar tech. He retired in 1992. He was very proud and honored to serve in the military and made a lot of lifelong friends there. Dad was “Mr. Fix It” he could fix almost anything, why? Because of his patience, Period. Dad enjoyed playing softball, cards, curling, travelling (visiting all 50 States) and puttering around the back yard. Dad also loved the Sens and St. Louis Cardinals baseball team.

The family would like to thank all health care for their caring, compassionate support throughout Dad’s journey. A special “Thank-you” to Dr. Giovanni Bonacci his amazing doctor and Dave Bellefleur and staff of Bellefleur Physiotherapy for their outstanding work with Dad.

Due to covid 19 restrictions a private service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, or for those who wish a donation to the Orleans Legion #632 or Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County would be greatly appreciated by the family. Rest in Peace Dad!
We Love You!

Memory of “Donald “Vance” MacNaughton

To Angus/Heather…my sincere condolences to the two of you. Sandra and I just found out about Vance. Vance was the kind of boss/friend that anyone could hope to have….a one in a lifetime person for me. Vance and Hanna sort of adopted we two back in 1970 and never let go. Th e really good thing I can say for certain is that Hanna is again calling him “my Vance” God will surely bless them both.
