In Memory of Catherine Mary Hyde
Hyde, Catherine Mary (née Roy) of Navan, Ontario passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at the age of 72, after a four and a half year battle with cancer. Grandmother to Calum, her “sunshine boy.” Wife to Fred, her partner of 47 years. Mother of Brent and Shena, her “designer” and her “teacher”. Mother-in-law to Emily, her “second daughter.” Sister to Ruth, Helen, Robert, Daniel, and Dale.
Born in Timmins, Ontario, Catherine moved to Ottawa where she started her family. She eventually settled in the nearby village of Navan where she immersed herself in many of the community groups over her 32 years there. She had so much passion and drive to take care of people, and that passion translated into everything she was involved in for her entire life.
While her children were growing up, she made a point of volunteering regularly in their schools, and continued to give her time as a “lunch mom” at the local public school long after her own kids had grown. She volunteered for the CHEO ladies auxiliary, as a Girl Guide and Brownie leader, with the Navan Women’s Institute, and with the Navan Senior’s drop-in community group. Catherine had an enormously positive impact on the social fabric of Navan through the activities of her walking group. She also spent more than two decades working for M.L. Bradley’s driving a school bus, training new drivers, and teaching bus safety to children.
Catherine had a passion for gardening and scrapbooking, and quite enjoyed snowshoeing in the winter. She thoroughly enjoyed hosting dinners and parties for friends and family. But her greatest joy was spending time with her grandson, Calum.
Respecting Catherine’s wishes, a cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation nor a funeral service. A Celebration of Life has been planned (by Catherine) for Saturday, May 12, 2018 at the Navan Arena from 2-4 pm.
Many thanks to the Elizabeth Bruyère Palliative Care Unit to whom we are extremely grateful for the excellent and compassionate care they provided Catherine in her final days, and to St. Elizabeth Health Care for providing Catherine with loving home care over the past several months. Thanks also to the Ottawa Cancer Centre.
If desired, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
