A LA DOUCE MÉMOIRE DE John Edward Powell
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Powell on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at the age of 82. John was born in Birmingham, England and immigrated to Canada in 1954. He was the son of the late George and Ivy Powell, and predeceased by his brother David and his sister Valerie.
For 43 years, John was the life partner of Susan Flemming. Together they lived and worked a small farm in Sarsfield.
He will be missed by his sisters-in-law Jane (Pat Yantha) and Linda (Bob Leguerrier) and his four nephews; Paul, Bryan (Ellen), Christian (Jessica) and Marc (the young lad) and his great nephew Logan. At two weeks old, his newest great nephew Miles, Leguerrier-Kurello, will not meet John, but will definitely come to know him through family stories.
John had many interests, but at the top of the list was his love for racing cars and trains. He spent many years in his youth on the track, and after his retirement from the federal government, he bought himself another race car and spent countless, happy hours working on it. One of his life’s great thrills was coming third in a race at Mosport when he was 68.
He had an enormous passion for trains: he collected replica trains; built a model train; read train magazines; bought books and calendars on trains; watched documentaries on trains; and accumulated train-themed collectables, from trinkets to ball caps and T-shirts.
Enormous thanks to family and friends who helped John through his struggles with dementia and his last hours at the hospital: Heather Jamieson, Dawn Stroz, Sarah Waghorn, Kathi Langston and Biz MacDonald.
Susan would like to thank the compassionate doctors and nurses at the General Campus of the Ottawa Hospital and the nurses and PSWs on the 6th floor of the Bruyère Residence for their many kindnesses and care.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 2, 2023 at 11 am in Dale’s Cemetery, Cumberland Village. The service will be followed by a light lunch on the Cumberland Museum grounds (picnic shelter).
As an expression of sympathy a donation to the Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County; the Élisabeth-Bruyère Residence; or the Ottawa Mission would be appreciated by the family.
