A LA DOUCE MÉMOIRE DE Dr. Barrett (Barry) Adams

Dr. Barrett (Barry) Adams, pediatrician (1934-2022)

The family sadly announces the death of their father on September 27th, 2022. Barry succumbed to his chronic idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, with support of his family and the palliative care teams, with strength and resignation. He was predeceased by his wife, Betty Anne (née Kay) in 2016. Barry was born in Cornwall, the third of nine children, to Archie and Belle. He his predeceased by his sisters and brothers-in-law Shirley (Vince Redmond), Val (Harvey Shannon), Gail (Earle Blackadder), Joan Kuhn, Alan Lougheed, Vinton Papps and his only brother Ronald. He is survived by his sisters, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Patricia Lougheed, Carol Papps, Debbie and Rick Zabloski, Aniska (Annie) Adams and Art Kuhn, as well as many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Dad was kind, loving and conscientious and brought to our home the love, caring and work ethic he learned from his parents and siblings. He enjoyed every day he went to work, whether see his hospital newborns and admissions or at his office to see his patients. It was difficult for him to retire.

Despite his dedication to his patients, he found time to contribute to his profession through active involvement with the Canadian Medical Association, Canadian Paediatric Society and the College of Physician and Surgeons. Barry was very involved in advocating for the building of a children’s hospital in our community and was on the founding committee of CHEO when it opened. He remained an honorary staff member.

His family want to thank the palliative care team and the personal support workers for allowing him to remain in his home.

He is survived by his children and their spouses. Barry and Betty Anne were proud of their 7 children (Elizabeth (Marc Paquette), Brian, Carolyn (Nao Tateishi), Jennifer (Brad Arndt), Robert (Karen Desrosiers), Jeffrey (Trudy Dundass), Stephanie (Darren MacEachern)), 18 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. We specifically want to thank and recognize Barry’s grandson Stéphane Paquette, and his wife Josée for all their care and attention, allowing him to remain in his home, in comfort. Seeing his great-granddaughter Joëlle everyday brought him so much joy at the end of his life.

Regardless of how little or how much, how often or how infrequent, every bit making Barry comfortable was appreciated. He and we thank you sincerely.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Heritage Funeral Complex, 1250 Trim Rd., Orléans on Friday, September 30th, 2022 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

A mass of Christian Funeral will be held at St. Faustina Church, 2571 Ottawa Regional Road 174, Cumberland, on Saturday, October 1st, 2022 at 11 a.m.

Condoléances

Dr. Adams was my son’s paediatrician. I also had the pleasure working with him at CPS. He was such a humble and kind man. He sure will be missed. My sincere condolences to the entire family. 🥲😢

I didn’t know Dr Barry Adams for very long. He was a prominent parishioner and supporter of St Faustina Parish (formerly St Margaret-Mary Parish). A kind soul, he lead the ushers there for many years. His attendance at meetings with the K of C was exemplary and showed his dedication to causes that would help others. His example will be missed just as he himself will be missed by all who knew him.

Barry you will be sadly missed. you came in our lives at the exercise classes and soon after offered to volunteer for Gaetan taking him out for haircuts, for lunch . Then we went out
for picnics in the Gatineau and the Canal Ritz on different occasions. We took you out to the sugar shack and came back with plenty of Maple syrup. As time went on and you were having your health problem you became my coach and counselor in regards to Gaetan’s Parkinson disease. Thanks for all your empathy and big heart. You will be in our hearts for ever.
Gaetan & Johanne

My sincere condolences to the Adams family.
Dr Adams brought me into this world and was my paediatrician. My mother used to tell of many heroics Dr Adams had performed. His greatest one was saving my life.I still to this day have very fond memories of visiting his office.
May god rest his soul.

I had the honour to work with Barry on various medical committees in the 1980’s………His leadership and sage advice was appreciated by his colleagues .

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Adams at Smyth paediatrics office, he was one of the kindest people I have ever met. He was extremely attentive to his patients and overall just a wonderful man. My condolences to his friends and family.

Dr. Adams took care of me as a child (I am 63), and was my children’s Pediatrician as they were growing up. When I had my first daughter 40 years ago, he came to visit me in the hospital, and the first words out if his mouth were: « You sure know how to make a guy feel old. » 😊 He was also a loyal and frequent customer to our jewellery business in St. Laurent Centre. He was kind, considerate, loving and gentle. My entire family is deeply saddened by his passing. Love, peace and comfort to you all in the coming days ahead. ❤

It was with great sadness that I heard of Barry’s passing. Or, « Doc » as we called him at the hunt camp. He was always jovial and in good humour, and we all enjoyed his company for our annual deer hunt at Cameron Lake. He was well loved and he will be sadly missed. Godspeed « Doc ». Sincere condolences to his entire Family.
The Guevremont Family.

Dearest Family of Dr. Adams;
I got to know your father because he was one of the faithful Adorers at the Adoration Chapel in Cumberland. Every week, Dr. Barry would relive me after my Adoration time. When he entered the Adoration Chapel, he would bow before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament first and then give me a smile. When I went to Mass, sometimes I would see him and we would speak and catch up to see how each one was doing. He was such a humble man. Unknown to me when I first met him, I didn’t know he was a doctor, I addressed him as Barry. He never said a word. Later, I was to discover, he was a doctor and apologized, he smiled.
My husband and I are traveling back from Newfoundland (driving). I am unable to make funeral but we send our heartfelt condolences to you all.
You will all be in our prayers,
Many blessings, Peggy & Keith Doucette

Dr. Adams was my doctor since I was little up untill 18 he was a great doctor always so kind and gentle made us laugh when we had to get needles. He will be dearly missed. When I turned 18 I wanted him to stay my doctor but he couldn’t I was really sad. I have never found a better doctor then him even for my daughter now. Dr Adams was the best. R.I.P

To the family and friends of Dr. Adams – I want to thank you for the gift of Dr. Adams – his generosity was amazing and his contribution to the Medical Friends of Peru and his friendship and support of the Oblates is significant. I extend to you my prayerful sympathies and assure you of my prayer for Dr. Adams and for you his family! May he be welcomed by the angels and saints! May all join with me in giving thanks for a wonderful faith filled person!

My sincerest condolences to the family. I worked with your father for many years at the Riverside and not only was he a great paediatrician he was a lovely person. He was always kind to his patients, respectful of the staff and he made going to work a pleasure. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I had the honor to serve on several medical boards with Barry and always looked to him as a colleague , mentor and leader but most important a friend- his warmth and sense ov humour was incredible and will be missed-

I had the pleasure of spending many fall Saturday afternoons at Gee-Gees field with Dr. Adams, and was happy to have him join us for last year’s Panda game where he shared stories of playing in the first one back in 1955.

Sending my sincerer condolences on behalf of the uOttawa Gee-Gees family.

Dear Adams family,
I had the pleasure to work with your father at CHEO but he was also our family pediatrician for our twins. He was a caring and knowledgeable physician. He was always there for families when needed. He was humble and kind to everyone. We are so thankful for the care he gave our children. He was also a good friend. Our children will always remember him fondly. My sincere condolences to all of you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult times,

Dr. Adams was a gifted pediatrician, an inspiring role model, and a dedicated teacher. Children and babies were drawn to his kind and gentle demeanor, and his pragmatic but contemporary approach to medical care reassured parents and caregivers. Barry taught me the art of community pediatrics when I was a first year pediatrics resident at CHEO, and as a neonatologist I still draw on some of those lessons today. He was truly a gem who will be missed. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Our sincere condolences to the family. So sad to hear of his passing. He will be missed. He was paediatrician to our two sons and we loved him very much. He was very dedicated to his profession. May he Rest In Peace.

Patricia and Michael Murphy

Dr. Barry held a special place in our family’s heart. Starting on Metcalfe St with us as his patients and then to all of our children. He took good care of the children & just as good care of the parents. Practical, kind, patient and so incredibly caring. I remember my last visit with my grown daughter and the biggest hug for me.
Thank- you for sharing this wonderful man with us all.

I am very saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Adams. He was a wonderful man and very caring Doctor. Doctor Adams cared for my 5 children and when our eldest daughter could not find a Doctor for her children Doctor Adams said he would care for her children but could not guarantee for how long as he was thinking about retirement.
When our youngest daughter graduated from Medical School Dr. Adams saw her name on the list and recognizing the name, he called me one day to ask for her address so that he could send her a letter of congratulations.
We will all remember what a great and humble man Dr. Adams was, a man who would go out of his way to call and make sure how the children were doing if they had been under his care and treatment.
To Dr. Adam’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and to the entire family, we offer our deepest sympathy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. May you rest in peace Dr. Adams.

Kind and conscientious … he was that way in the hospital too – always. Dr Adams was someone we all looked up to as residents and then pediatricians. I often wondered his secret to a happy fulfilling career. I think it was his kindness. Dr Adams lost his wife around the same time I lost my parents. Despite being separated by decades in age and life experience, I will never forget his embrace, a moment we shared in grief. Thank you Dr. Adams for being such a beautiful example of steadfast kindness in our community and in our profession.

Condolences from the MOUSSA family who cherish Dr Adam he was an amazing doctor to 2 generations of our family Moussa , Awadah, Akrouche families .

Dear Elizabeth, Marc, Stephane and Adams family, I’m so sorry for your incredible loss. Barry was an amazing person, whose compassion and kindness touched me and so many others who were lucky enough to come into his life. I remember his eyes light up as he described the day the village in Peru got running water for the first time thanks to the Medical Friends of Peru, while he was there visiting for the first time. He will be remembered and missed greatly. Peace.

Barry was a humble doctor that was highly respected by those who knew him. He displayed a genuine warmth and caring when you were with him. I always hoped that as a fellow pediatrician that I would become the kind of role model for which he was so much admired. He will be greatly missed.
.

Humble, caring, and generous physician
Dr. Adams will be sadly missed, by patients, friends, & colleagues
My sincere condolences to his children, family, and friends

The most wonderful and kind man. My children’s doctor and my grandchildren’s doctor and a family friend. Very sad news. My condolences to all the family. 😢🤗🙏

My sympathies on the loss of your beloved Barry. He was the paediatrician for our 5 children and played a large part in helping me become a good mom. No question was too silly or naive. He answered every one with kindness and gentleness. We didn’t have CHEO when my oldest daughter, 4 years old at the time, had to go to the Civic hospital to have a cut on her forehead stitched up. The emergency doctor was somewhat impatient with her screeching as he rather roughly cleaned her wound. Dr. Adams reassured me that there was nothing wrong with either my daughter or myself but that some doctors are not used to kids. He said that we would soon have a children’s hospital where kids would be treated well. His legacy continues. My youngest grandson Skylar who was born at 26 weeks of gestation spent 4 months at CHEO. The staff there saved his life on more than one occasion. I think of Dr. Adams every time Skylar goes there for his checkups. We were so lucky to have him in our lives.

To All The Family,

My father Terry Barrett, was a first cousin to Barry. Although I did not know him well my father talked about him fondly. I am sure somewhere along the years we met in my younger days. I knew of his practice as a physician specializing in paediatrics, and all of Barry’s accomplishments. He has left a unique legacy. May your memories bring you peace and joy knowing the impact he had on many lives.

Leanne Michalofsky (nee Barrett)

Our sincere condolences to the Adams family! Emilie, Miguel and the whole family our thoughts are with you. 🤍

We send our condolences to the family and friends of Dr Adams.
Our family members were very lucky to have him as our pediatrician. His kind and caring demeanor is a constant reminder amongst all of us and our cousins growing up.
Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

A dear and much loved gentleman…he was paediatrician to my children ,nephews, grandchildren.and grand nieces and nephews..as an obstetric nurse I remember well the feeling of relief when he walked into the room during a difficult delivery..no panic, no fuss ,just a reassuring, gentle ,successful resuscitation to set this newborn on the path to a hopefully happy normal life…he will be missed…sincere condolences to his family on the loss of this beloved man

My most sincere condolences to the family. I was a patient of Dr. Adams many years ago. To this day I still have fond memories of his caring and calm demeanour. I remember him as a gentle soul. May he rest in peace.

Dr. Adams was the family pediatrician for our two daughters growing up. I absolutely loved this man. He was so patient and you could tell he absolutely loved what he did. My daughter, at age 8, was hospitalized with a rare form of mononucleosis and he was the only one who was able to finally diagnose correctly what she had. My sincere condolences and may he rest in peace he so deserves!

We wish to express our condolences to Dr. Adam’s family and every one who were close to him! He will certainly be missed by his children, grand children and great grand children.
Monic & Yves Charlebois

Dr Adams was my pediatrician and by the age of 8, because of his example, I knew I wanted to become a paediatrician just like him!!!! Caring, knowledgeable, calm, reassuring!!! Thanks to him and his example, my dream of becoming a paediatrician came true and I am forever grateful that he played such an important role in my life!! I don’t know if I am as good a pediatrician as he was but I am aiming to be and sure will try!! He is often in my thoughts but today even more! My thoughts and prayers are with your family!

To the children of Dr Adams. I’m so sorry to hear of his passing
Just a couple of weeks ago I emailed him to tell him the good news that our daughter had won her battle against breast cancer. I had no idea that he was in the palliative unit at the hospital at the time
Barry, Betty Ann my late husband Bob & I go back to the days of Med school including the late Joe & Betty McElligot, We all married the same day so couldn’t attend each other’s wedding. Then Barry his wife, Bob & I all moved to St-Clair Shore Mi for their internship
We kept in contact throughout the years. We took several trips, including one to England to a medical convention. Later with Betty & Joe a weekend trip to Niagara Falls on our anniversaries every five years. I will always remember those times we all spend together. Barry was so kind and a pleasure to be with including the others.
Barry & I kept in touch after Bob’s passing in 2018. He wanted to make sure I was all right and keeping well. That’s the kind person he was.
I wish to offer my sympathies to all the family. You have lost a great father and a fantastic man.
My love to all, Renee

Tres bon souvenir lorsqu »il pratiquait avec les Dr. Doyle & Guillemet au 152 Metcafe
tres devoue et en garde de bon souvenirs, sinceres condoleence a votre famille

Sincere sympathy to all the family . I worked with your Dad in the sixties and he then cared for our daughters . Dr. Adams was always kind and compassionate and an excellent doctor with outstanding values . May your fond memories help you through this difficult time . Carmel Scrim

Barry was truly a wonderful family man, a father, grandfather and great grandfather to so many and as well he was a very caring humanitarian who was able to help a lot of people both in Canada and around the world. He was a very inspiring man, so dedicated to his work as a paediatrician and he will be sorely missed. Our fondest memories are of Barry cooking a big turkey dinner for all the family (he always included us even though we were not really a member of his immediate family), having picnic lunches in his backyard and also at hockey games, cheering on his grandson. We enjoyed chatting with him and seeing his infectious smile. Rest in Peace, Barry. Your life was very well lived and you deserve to be free from the hard work forever more.

We are so sorry to hear of Dr. Adams’ passing. He was not only my paediatrician when my family moved to Ottawa, but my husband and I felt blessed to have him as the paediatrician for our three children. My aunt used to say, first there’s God, and then there’s Dr. Adams; that is how much we appreciated and trusted in his care. When our youngest daughter fell ill with no definitive answers, Dr. Adams scripted a note to the doctors at CHEO regarding what they should check for, and he was right on. Doctors there shared with us that any other physician was unlikely to have picked up on this illness. Dr. Adams was special. We also recall that Dr. Adams was on his way out of town on the day we were sent to the hospital but he came directly to our child’s hospital room from the airport when he returned two days later.
I hope stories such as ours bring you comfort in the sorrow of losing your dear father. We thank you for sharing him with our family and the greater community. The Bliers

Dr. Adams was a very respected and loved doctor for the many that knew him as a doctor and a friend.
He will be greatly missed. My condolences to his family.

Barry was a kind and caring physician who I had the pleasure of sharing his office in my early days in Ottawa and then frequent chats especially at CPS meetings with he and Betty Anne He will be greatly missed. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers

Amazing doctor and a great man. Those who knew him knew he was a kind and very generous person. Thank you Dr Adams for the years care and support to me and my family. Our condolences from the Pelletier family.

Debbie & family:

my thoughts are with all of you. it,s hard to say goodbye.
May god help you through the difficult days ahead.
hugs.

Barry and my late husband Robert Lawn were both born in 1934 in Cornwall. Over the years they stayed in touch and I heard many stories about their teen-age years and their family ties. Both men were dedicated to their professions, their families and their church.
Of special value to all of Eastern Ontario was Barry’s support of the establishment of CHEO. Please accept my sincere condolences for the loss of this wonderful human being – Sandra Lawn in Prescott, Ontario

I was saddened to hear about Barry »s death and I want to extend my sincere condolences to the entire Adams family. I got to know him very well as I practiced pediatrics at the same time as he did for over 40 years. Simply put, he knew his priorities. His family came first and foremost. He was exceptionally devoted to Betty Anne. Next came his medical practice. He was always available to his patients. He was very approachable and very good at giving practical advice. He would always go the extra mile. Incredibly, he still had time to advocate for patients and fellow physicians at the OMA, CPS and CPSO. He was always very humble about his accomplishments. CHEO always held a special place in his heart. He also had a life outside of of medicine. He spent countless hours with his family at the cottage. He loved being outdoors. He was an avid hunter. He loved taking care of the large property around the house in Cumberland. He loved travelling , especially with Betty Anne. Barry was truly an exceptional person who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Dr. Adams and Dr. Doyle worked together on Metcalfe when I was a child. He also attended the 67’s games and was there the day my dad who was the timekeeper needed a Doctor and he took care of Dad right to the hospital. Dr. Adams also cared for my two boys until they became adults. Our condolences to the family.

I worked with Dr. Adams at the Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ontario. He was kind, caring and approachable. His patients and their families appreciated the time he would always take to visit and examine the patient and explain the illness and treatment to the parents. He was a dedicated and knowledgeable paediatrician and respected by all who worked with him. I was a nurse on the 4th floor where many of his patients would be admitted. and knew I could call him at any time if there were concerns. I know he will be missed by all his colleagues.

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Adams.
He was such a kind and humble man. He was a faithful customer of mine for several years and over this time I got to get to know him quite well. He had such a sharp mind and took an interest in everyone who knew him. He always had a good story to share with me each time I saw him.
I am honoured to have known such a wonderful man, who I know will be sorely missed.
My sincere condolences to all his family and friends.

I hope Dr. Adams’ family is comforted during this difficult time by knowing the great contribution he made to the health and well-being of our community’s children. In the 25 years I supported families at CHEO, I came to know that those who were fortunate enough to have Dr. Adams as their pediatrician were in good clinical hands and had a strong advocate for their needs. When I reached out on behalf of children with complex needs who were not so fortunate, he kindly agreed to take them on as patients so they too could live their fullest lives. Through them (and his family), his legacy will live on.

To the Adams family, our deepest condolences to the passing of a truly remarkable man,

My sister and I both had the pleasure of having Dr. Adams as our pediatrician and kept seeing us until we were 19.
He was always kind, patient, and genuine with every interaction.
I had the pleasure of speaking to him before my wedding this past summer and will treasure our last conversation.
Words can’t describe how great he really was, my family and I miss him dearly, thank you Dr. Adams, for everything.

Dr Adams, Thank you for your incredibly kind act. You wrote an article in the Citizen after I shared my experience in an Ottawa restaurant where I was accosted while best feeding my newborn. I was very touched that you took time to submit an article to address this issue.
Grace Bruno

This is a great loss to the whole of the Ottawa Valley Since Barry was one of the best Pediatricians in the Ottawa valley. He would listen to what we were worried about with our children and could figure out the most complicated problems and then fix/correct them. Being a Doctor’s Daughter myself I know how hard these men work, and at all hours as well. He was the one who discovered that my children were allergic to mother’s milk, the same day that the pro breast feeding group was telling us that that was not possible.
He certainly will be missed.

Dr. Adams was the kindest, most amazing doctor I have ever met. Both of my children benefited from his vast knowledge and patience whenever we saw him (in my daughter’s case, that was often as she has CP.) He was also the inspiration for my daughter to go into a field of medicine so that she can make a difference in peoples’ lives as he did. We offer our deepest condolences and also our sincerest thanks for having the privilege of knowing such a wonderful man.

Dr. Adams was a great kind and thorough Dr. I loved bringing my two children to his office on metcalfe. He was there from the moment both of my children were born. He was quick to diagnose one of my children with heart issues and was always there to help. Just loved his kind words of support. I especially remember his advice on several topics like you don’t need to bathe them every day. They don’t get that dirty lol and when they are hungry they’ll eat so don’t try to force feed them. Just relax and enjoy being there for them. Such a great doctor. RIP. My deepest sympathies to the family.

I just came upon this sad news today. To the family and friends of Dr. Adams, I extend my condolences for your loss.

I met this fine gentleman through my father and his association with the Ontario Medical Association. Many meals and great chats were shared with both Dr and Mrs Adams and I will remember them fondly for their kindness, intelligence, wit and a most rare trait these days, common sense.

May your memories always be a soft place to land.

I had the privilege to work with Dr B Adam in CPSO and OMA A dedicated physician with a keen sense of civic duty
We celebrate his life and legacy

To the Family of Dr. Adams,
My apologies for the delay sending this condolence. Our sincere thoughts and prayers are sent to you in this sad time. He was not only a Wonderful physician but a great compassionate person. One doesn’t get lucky to have such a great physician. They are a rare species. What a Great loss, he will be so very missed. However, I must say he did leave a remarkable legacy to be very proud of. Please cherish your memories and hold them close to your heart.
The Couturier Family

I was reading a medical publication at my daughter-in-law’s and saw Dr. Adam’s name listed in the In Memorial column. I worked on Paediatrics at Riverside Hospital from 1966 when it opened until 1974 when CHEO opened, at which time I moved to Barrie. I will never forget Dr. Adam’s who was such a gentle, caring man and my all time favourite pediatrician. Rest in Peace Dr. Adam’s.
