À LA DOUCE MÉMOIRE DE Ashok Sahgal

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our extraordinary husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many, Ashok Sahgal, who transitioned to his heavenly home at the age of 73 on November 13th, 2023.

He was the dear, loving husband of Manisha (nee Vyas) for over 48 years. Cherished father to Oshima (late Hunsdeep), Neil and Anusha (Justin). Loving Nana to his granddaughter Neela and grandson Téo Jasper. Dad loved his grandkids more than anything in this world, they were his pride and joy.

Dad was born on January 16, 1950 in Delhi- India to late Bal Rai and late Vidyavati Sahgal (nee Kapoor). He grew up in the small town of Shakti Nagar where he enjoyed playing the guitar and harmonica, singing, and riding on his scooter. He always excelled academically and graduated from the prestigious India Institute of Technology in 1972. He was the youngest of three children. He will be dearly missed by his sister Swaran Khurana (late Shashi Bhushan) as well as all his nephews and nieces, who he considered to be his own children. He was predeceased by his brother Basant (Kusum) who he looked up to considerably.

Dad came to Canada in 1973 to study at the University of Ottawa where he graduated with an Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering. Around this time he met many of his life-long friends as well as our beautiful mother, Manisha. They got married on September 6, 1975 in Ottawa’s civil court. Dad will be greatly missed by his mother-in-law Rama Vyas (late Prabashankar), his sisters in-law Tilusha and Elash, his brothers in-law Manoj (Mina) and Kanesh (Navine), and all his nephews and nieces.

There was nothing that Dad loved more than being with family and friends. He had a kind, gentle and very generous heart, always blessing those in need. Anyone that knows Dad can attest to his witty sense of humor, his love for food & cooking, and his passion for music, especially Bob Dylan and Jagjit Singh.

While we will miss you terribly, Dad, we know you are happy to be reunited in paradise with those you loved and missed so dearly. 0m Shanti

In celebration of Dad’s life, family and friends are invited to join us at Heritage Funeral Complex 1250 Trim Road, Orleans on Wednesday, November 22, 2023. Visitation will begin at 11:00am with a Celebration of Life service to follow 11:30am to 1:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

i remember the first time i met Ashok in the summer of 1975. I remember the last time I met Ashok. In these, almost 50 years, my memories of Ashok are made up of innumerable snippets that lasted as long as a cigarette….and it is in these brief interactions that I was exposed to his passions (my last memory of Ashok is him reciting a Bob Dylan song…he would stop…hum the song in his head and continue reciting the song aloud to me). In these brief moments, I was exposed to his humour, his kindness, his charm, his wisdom (once we were walking out to find a place to smoke and he said, « if you go right, you cant go wrong » which is a line I have used many times since then!).

Thank you Ashok for the privilege of the time your shared with me…and the world!! In many many moments in the future we will think of you fondly and cherish your memories!!

Ashok was a very kind & gentle person, a very soft spoken person.
We loved his singing especially Jagjit Singh’s ghazals.
He was a lovely singer and a humble human being.
He will be missed by all he knew.
He always encouraged Manisha to sing, a loving & a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
We will always miss him.
May his soul rest in peace.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

RIP – he was like family -I lived with him for more than two years and there are so many pleasant memories to cherish. His love for music and cooking was legendary.

Miss him so much that it hurts.

Kamlesh & Subash Vohra

Our sincerest condolences are for the entire Sehgal family. You have our deepest sympathy and ultimate support. At this time of sorrow, our thoughts are with you. May God keep his soul at peace.

We have many many sweet memories of Ashok’s friendship with us since 1997 and of course playing the guitar on Bob Dylan songs as also with songs sung by others too. In particular his encouragement to the singer by giving him or her the lead in his own voice to match the tune was exemplary. He was a nice human being who believed in making friendships for keeps with his regular BBQs and Soirées at home with his favorite pork chops also in picnics and Camping coupled and spiced with his jokes.

He will be missed terribly and we pray to the Almighty to give peace to his soul and strength to the bereaved family! Om Shanti ! Every time we will listen to Bob Dylan and Jagjit Singh, Ashok will be missed with moist eyes.

bichade sabhie baari baari(meaning losing friends one by one ) sad very sad situation.

I fondly remember you playing your guitar and singing old Hindi tunes with a big smile on your face. You were always so cheerful to speak to with your jovial nature and a sense of calm. May you rest in peace Uncle. 🙏🏻

With Love,
Pammy

A big loss to our family. Last met him long ago when he had visited us at Kishan Ganj Delhi Home. My father late Sh K. We still can’t get over the fact that you are no longer there, Chacha. You will be always fondly remembered and eternally loved by us. Not only you were a father figure to us, but we will miss you for every small gesture and love that you showered on us. Our visits to Ottawa will not be the same any more. You celebrated the simplest pleasures of life and brought great joy to everyone around you. We will miss you!!!

Rest In Peace my friend . Your music, humor and friendly nature touched a lot of us. You will always be alive in our memories.

I met Ashok first time in 1968 in second year of B.Tech at IIT hostel Nilgiri through my room mate Ashok Uppal. Many times we were just three Ashoks in one room. I enjoyed his playing guitar in our room sometimes at mid night. He was so intelligent that he passed every exam in flying colours .
We just had a chat on phone and then met at wedding . He was down this time and indicated his dissatisfaction on his health. I never anticipated that he would leave us that soon.

Wherever you are my my friend, just sing and smile.

our heartfelt condolences on the sudden passing away of my friend since 1972. We met when some young university students volunteered to take care f a group of young ladies who had just arrived from Uganda in October 1972. Manisha and I were one of those two ladies. Askok was the quietest of the rest of the volunteers. Manisha was a charmer. Everyone wanted to get to know Manisha but Ashok stole her heart. Miss the fun parties we attended with Bobby, Ramesh, Kishore and others. May you rest in peace Ashok. Manisha we will pray for you and your family to get the courage and strength to bear this devastating loss. God Bless you all.

It is very difficult to believe that our beloved Shoki mama( as I remember calling him since my childhood) is not with us anymore.
I will never forget the earliest memories of him, with a guitar strumming Bob Dylan and Beatles songs We enrolled in music lessons with his encouragement and all 3 of us brothers are able to play a musical instrument because of him. He was our mentor whom we looked up to for advice and guidance .
As kids growing up in Ludhiana we would look forward to the short trips our cousins from Canada would take and the party that would follow with his famous songs ( he was as good as Jagjit Singh with his western twist to the classics ,and one of my favorite song he sang was the Beatles song Rocky Racoon).
Early in my med school, I took a vacation and ended up spending a few weeks with Shoki mama , Manisha mami and our cousins Anusha, Oshima and baby Neil . That trip was memorable not only because it was the first time for me in Canada, but the way I was treated by the family, with almost daily outdoor grilling with his favorite recipes and of course Labatt blue . He was as good a host as my dad / his Jijaji ,with whom he got along famously. My favorite hobby of cooking / grilling came from that trip and years later many new recipes and ideas from him.
Fast forward a few decades and when we moved to the US, Shoki Mama was always available by phone to begin and then audio Skype and then video chats over the weekend . While we were in Michigan , many trips were made to Ottawa to meet up.
Over the years he remained my sounding board through the ups and downs in life including losing Daddy, Chachiji and Basant mamaji , and through successes and setbacks in career and stock markets, we would discuss everything , share jokes and emails. I always looked forward to these sessions with him and could talk to him about everything and nothing .
I was fortunate to be able to speak to him a day before this news hit us hard and seemed improbable at the time . It will take some time for all of us to come to terms with this reality.
To Manisha mami and my dearest cousins , he was a rock for all of us – he is gone but I see reflections of him in all of us . May he rest in peace always .He will be in our hearts and memories forever.

The best place to be is in someone’s heart and prayers. That’s where you will always be dear Ashok in our hearts, prayers and memories. We will miss your sincere friendship, your infectious laughter, Bob Dylan’s songs and your ghazals and your love for strictly non vegetarian food! Our heartfelt condolences to Manisha and family. Rest In Peace🙏❤️

Dear Ashok- your memory will remain in our hearts . We are deeply saddened by your loss but grateful for wonderful time we had together. Ashok you have left us too soon but your presence will be felt dearly

We are deeply saddened to hear the news of sudden demise of Ashok Sehgalji. Our sincerest Condolences to the entire Sehgal Family.
Dear Manisha, Our thoughts and Prayers are with You during this difficult time and always. May the Almighty Lord Grant Ashokji’s Devine Soul Eternal Peace Forever. 🕉Shanti, Shanti,Shanti 🕉—-
Bhabhu, Madhubhabhi & Bhupendra 🙏🙏🙏

Dear Manisha, Oshima, Neela, Anusha, Neil, Justin and baby

We are so sorry to hear this very sad news of Ashok’s sudden passing – words will never be adequate to express our deep sorrow, nor remove the pain you are suffering. Our hearts are with you.
We are wishing for him peace and comfort now, he will live on in you and our memories – his light will forever shine.

Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for him
In the jingle jangle morning he’ll come following you

Please also take the time to care for yourselves,
With love

I met Ashok first time when we started in 1st grade in elementary school. He was always such a lively and friendly person. In school he used to play harmonica and that instrument was always in his pocket and he would take it out and start playing at the first opportunity. Then after finishing 8th grade he moved over to ASVJ school, but we got together again in IIT Delhi when we joined the 1967 batch of Chemical Engineering. It is hard to believe that my dear friend Ashok Sehgal has left us. I pray for his soul 🙏

Shokie Mama was the best, & most fun uncle one could have as a kid, and the nicest person to hang out with as we grew up to adulthood. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Dear Manisha

My thoughts are with you during this time of sorrow following the loss of your husband Ashok. I would like to wish you comfort during this difficult time, and my deepest sympathies go to you and your family.
Om Shanti Shanti Shanti 🙏🙏🙏

I keep remembering uncle singing this line from Tears in Heaven, “if I saw you in heaven”. He sang that one often at parties if I remember correctly. I hope you’re there in heaven uncle and seeing many loved ones there. May your soul be forever at peace .
I’m so sorry for this great loss dear Manisha aunty, Oshima, Neil and Anusha and dear children. May God provide comfort, healing and strength.

I met Ashok on my first day at the Ottawa University in January 1979. Ashok was kind enough to take me to buy winter coat and offered me to stay at his place for few days till I found my own place. That was the start of my friendship with Ashok, which I cherished a lot. He was always caring and helpful. I could always count on him. I truely lost a friend.

MAY GOD REST his Divine Soul in Heavenly Peace. I lost one of my closest and dearest friends. Take care of yourself, Manisha.

Uncle you always welcomed me with your genuine smile any time I saw you. Your eyes would always light up around your family and friends. Wishing you peace and hope Bob Dylan is playing wherever you are. All my love to the family.

Dear Ashok
I remember the good old days at Ottawa U, listening to you sing your favorite Bob Dylan songs and also going to a Bob Dylan concert with you.
We had many discussions talking about the meaning of our favorite Dylan songs, miss those days.

We will miss you, my friend.

Shoki mama, it was always amazing to watch you sing when I was a kid , was Infact inspiring. The memories, music , songs and the warmth that was experienced in your presence will always give comfort and you will be sorely missed.
